CN II, III, IV & VI Examination
, Introduction/ Consent/ Hygiene
Clean the hand beforehand
Ask if it is OK to examine some Cranial Nerves and explain that you going to work on the face
and jaw. If the patient gives consent, you are ready to go.
Observation CN’s II, III, IV and VI
E.g., Ptosis, Anisocoria, Pupil regularity, Strabismus, proptosis,
scleral injection, iris color.
CN II
Acuity
- We do not perform, this is a part that reading, we skip this!
Perimetry (edge of visual field)
- Function of the retina, visual field (how broad is this visual
field). Hand on the eye, eye is still looking at the
examiner. Pin is taken out of visual field PT has to say
when he doesn’t see it anymore
Blind spot
- You look for an enlarged blind spot (lesion in the retina or optic nerve). Hand over
eye, eye syill looking at the examiner. Pin is taken away (around the shoulder the
blindspot is expected)
Visual field Scotoma assessment
- Can or cannot identify any are which is not absorbing light correctly (scotoma is a
defect). Hand over eye, look in the eye of the examiner, the examiner is making
circles patient tells when he doesn’t sees the pin anymoe
Fundoscopy
- Is not allowed due to covid-19 v(look in the eye with light)

Pupillary Light Reflex (direct & consensual)
