In this paper, I would like to explain vividly the relationship and connectedness of
Scientific Revolution and Intellectual Revolution.
Before, when Scientific Revolution and intellectual revolution is not commencing
yet, the beliefs of the people were based upon the teachings of the church. Scientific
Revolution is defined as the golden age in the history of science. It is the period of
enlightenment in the fields of math, physics, biology, chemistry and astronomy. It
started on 16th to 18th century in Europe. Intellectual revolution on the other hand, is
driven by the curiousity, critical thinking, creativity and passion to know of the scientists
led to science ideas and discoveries. Intellectual revolution is the period where
fundamental changes occurred because of many scientists such as Nicolaus
Copernicus, Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud. In my own point of view, Scientific
Revolution commenced because of the intellectual revolution of certain scientists along
with their concepts.
It is believed that the book of Nicolaus Copernicus, On the revolutions of the
Heavenly Spheres which discusses the heliocentric theory was the start of scientific
revolution. Heliocentric theory states that Earth and other planets revolve around the
sun at the center of the universe. This theory opposes geocentric theory which states
that the planets, stars and moon orbit around Earth. Copernicus’ ideas were results of
thought expirements. However, the book was banned on the 16 th century because it
was believed that it is heretic and an unacceptable idea to be taught to catholics. Also,
the theory of revolution was proposed by the scientist Charles Darwin. His book entitled,
The origin of species talks about how species evolved over the time. This idea changed
the dominant views of a biblical design wherein humans were created by God. The
psychoanalysis method that was discovered by Sigmund Freud had a great impact on
the scientific way of understanding human nature. His ideas and theories are still
considered nowadays as a great inspiration to examine human mind and behavior.
