Indigenous Science
Instruction: Identify five (5) Filipino indigenous knowledge and research on the connection of
these indigenous knowledge to science and technology. Place your answers on this template.
Answers:
1. Preserving food
In my own point of view, food preservation is connected to science and technology. Science and
technology maintains safe and hygienic conditions during processing, storage and package of
food. The indigenous knowledge of preserving food combined with science and technology
prevents the spoilage of food and extend their shelf-life while assuring the consumers of a
product free from bacteria and harmful microorganism.
2. Using herbal medicine
Herbal medicine is a type of dietary supplement which are sold as tablets, capsules, teas, or
dried plants. People often use herbal medicines to maintain or improve their health. I think that
science and technology plays a vital role in the study of herbal medicines. For example, a
research on a certain herbal medicine with the help of technology enables the researcher to
know if it is effective in curing a certain disease.
3. Predicting weather using celestial bodies
The indigenous knowledge about predicting weather using celestial bodies has improved
through science and technology. Technologies such as weather satellites collects data about
weather which allows daily forecasts. Through the use of technology, forecasters can now make
more accurate predictions about the weather.
4. Building local irrigation system
Irrigation is important because it helps to grow crops and revegetate disturbed soils in dry areas
and during periods of less than average rainfall. I believe that local irrigation system has
improved through science and technology and is proven by drip irrigation system. This drip
irrigation system minimizes fertilizer and nutrient loss while the water application efficiency is
high too. This proves that science and technology and local irrigation is connected with each
other.
5. Producing wines from tropical fruits
I believe that the indigenous knowledge about producing wines from tropical fruits is connected
to science and technology. Winemaking is the production of wine, starting with the selection of
the fruit, its fermentation into alcohol, and the bottling of the finished liquid.
The making of wines and beers uses biotechnology under certain controlled conditions.
