According to Webster’s’ sociology is the science of society, social institutions, and social
relationships specifically; the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and
collective behavior of organized groups of human beings; the scientific analysis of a social
institution as a functioning whole and as it relates to the rest of society
The way I understand it the four words that are key here are human society,
development, structure and function. The goal of sociology is to be able to explain the outcomes
of individuals and their personal attributes, opinions, tastes, and characteristics in terms of their
social environment. More specifically, it is an application of statistical analysis and the search for
cause and effect relationships between identifiable social variables like race, religion, income,
earnings, education, and gender.
I am choosing to study this field because I want to know what makes us function as a
person. Why is that two parents with the same values, and morals can raise three children and
they all be so completely different. I have a background in addiction, and I want to pursue my
master’s in social work. I have been struggling with alcohol addiction for over 20 years. I have
periods of sobriety and then I have a drink. Over the course of this addiction I have gotten
divorced, lost my children, been homeless, and been to jail.
I now have a great relationship with my sons and my family. My ex-husband and I are
amicable. I wat to be able to help others, especially women that we are worth it. I feel that as a
woman we go from being someone’s’ daughter, girlfriend and the mom, our identity is found in
what we do not who we are and that needs to change. I am not the mistakes that I make.
