PART 1: Environmental Psychology Review and Analysis
Due: Friday, April 1 by 4 pm EST (PDF draft slides)
Friday, April 8 by 11:59 pm EST
Points: 100
This second part of the semester we are going to dive into A Philosophy of Interior Design by Stanley Abercrombie (a
book that has icon status in the interior design academy). The chapters in this text are divided topically – there are 14
overarching philosophical discussions related to interior design.
You are assigned a partner and a topic (chapter) from this text to review, explore, and analyze as a team. Each group
is assigned a different chapter. Your task is to fully read and interpret your assigned chapter, then provide a
presentation that summarizes the content of the chapter and provides your team’s analysis of a specific point, idea or
case study featured in the chapter that relates to the built environment in real life. Each chapter has a different theme
and thus differing information, but your chapter may include terminology, definitions, discussion on scales of design,
case studies, design consideration, impacts on designers, impacts on users in built environments, environmental
psychology discussions, and more.

For example, the first chapter is called Being Outside. The chapter is about exposure, both physical exposure to the
elements and psychological feeling of being exposed in a space. An analysis may include photographs assessing
different styles of entry into a building – ones that enter directly off the street, ones that are set back and hidden,
ones that have a transition space into a larger space, etc. You might photograph various instances of these entrances
in real life that you experience and provide a reflection on the psychological and physical impacts the design of each
entrance has on people, based on the information provided in the assigned chapter.
You will provide a 5-10 minute pre-recorded video with your presentation along with an 11x17 PDF of your slides.
Submit both the video recording file and the PDF file by 11:59 pm on April 8. An intermediate draft PDF will be
submitted by 4 pm on April 1.
PDF:
Interior design is a visual field and visual learning is a large benefit to helping us learn from one another. Please
consider your PDF submission in terms of graphic representation, clarity of images, diagrams that synthesize
information, and clear visual wayfinding. Please do not only include text with bullet points – this does not show
summarization or analysis.
Content Summary:
Synthesize the reading and summarize in digestible and accessible points. You do not need to provide additional
information in this section – simply translate the reading into a graphic and visual presentation with easy takeaways.
Analysis
Do your own analysis vs. reference case studies or precedent studies. Take your own photographs and assess them
based on criteria/factors from the reading.
Draft PDF: submit a rough draft of your slides that clearly summarizes the chapter and shows the direction you want
to take your analysis in, as well as any analysis progression. I will review over the weekend and provide feedback by
the next Monday so over the course of the following week your team will be able to refine your work prior to
presentation and final submission.
