Introduction
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are an essential part of the United States
healthcare system. APRNs are essential care providers and play an important role in providing
preventive care services to the public. APRNs play an important role in shaping the nursing
profession to respond to our changing health care system. Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an APRN
with higher standard of education and expert medical skills in various settings, such as; primary
care, acute, and long-term care to deliver safe and quality health care to diverse populations. NPs
are educated and trained at the master’s or post master’s level in a specific role and patient
population, and once they get extensive training they work independently or under the
supervision of a physician. NPs provide individuals, families, and groups with nursing and
medical services. Educating and counseling are major components of the activities of the Nurse
Practitioner. NPs have the responsibility to provide health education and counseling to the
patients and their families. NPs are also responsible in promoting health, preventing diseases,
diagnosis and treatment.
This research paper explores the current scope of practice for a specialty and efforts that
are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced nurse in positively influencing
the health care system.
The scope of a future role as an advanced registered nurse
NPs are prepared with higher level of qualification and clinical skills to provide a wide
range of preventive and acute health care services to diverse populations. NPs collect health
information and provide comprehensive physical examinations. NPs interpret laboratory values
