The article must be from 2010 or later and should include considerations about regional and national health policy. What are the findings of the article? All answers are true. Topic 6 DQ1 Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Identify the criteria you would use to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Nurses incorporate evidence-based practice into the delivery of patient care. The process involves collecting, assessing and applying research findings. Research gathered through EBP improves clinical decision-making, work environments and patient outcomes. To provide exceptional patient care in an ever evolving and complex healthcare system, nurses need to continue discovering innovative ways to practice nursing. Nurses are a valuable asset and the key to advancing patient care. Through communication and collaboration with patients, peers and researchers, nurses can reduce risk by staying informed about the latest and most successful options for positive patient outcomes. Nurses utilize quantitative or qualitative research in order to evaluate the best interventions for patients. They also may gather information by performing quantitative or qualitative research. The data nurses collect helps them determine how to proceed with patient care. The objective of implementing an evidence-based practice in healthcare is to ensure that it brings the required change in the targeted organization (Löfmark, Hannersjö & Wikblad, 1999). In healthcare, introduction of evidence-based solutions aims at improving the quality of care offered to patients and enhancing the treatment outcomes. Moreover, minimizing the cost of healthcare is also becoming an important consideration in the implementation of evidence-based practice in healthcare setting. In my hospital the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting, it is challenging providing patients with regular sleep/wake cycles. The ICU environment is filled with sound, lights and activity. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggested the noise levels in every hospital units should not over 30 dBA at night. Above 30 dBA is called sleep disturbance. In reality, noise levels inside hospitals are always higher than the WHO guideline values. The noise level in ICU is usually ranges from 50 to 75 dBA. The worst situation can be reached 103 dBA in the highest night peak level. Numerous research-based studies identify sleep as a significant component in the healing process and delirium prevention. A quiet environment helps patients heal faster and better. Sleep disturbance is one of a factors in the development of delirium, as well as producing specific effects on the respiratory, cardiovascular and immunological systems. It can elevate levels of cortisol and other stress hormones. It also can impair wound healing and cellular immunity. Not enough sleeping is worsened cognitive functioning, including delirium, cognitive slowing and deterioration, and decreased motivation to task. One method that would facilitate in determination of the effectiveness of the evidence- based practice is summative evaluation. Summative evaluations are intended to provide a package of results used to assess whether a program works or not. Summative evaluation measures the value of Health Information Exchange with respect to clinical decision-making, health care delivery, as well as patient and population outcomes. It is essentially a systematic mechanism that enables collection and analysis of data on the effects/impacts of an intervention, output, and outcomes during implementation. This method would therefore help in measuring and determining the success, efficacy and cost implications of my evidenced based projects in the healthcare organization.
