HIS 100 Project Template

Use this template to address the steps in your Project Guidelines and Rubric. Replace the
bracketed text with your responses. Ensure that you have considered your instructor’s feedback
when revising your work. Proofread the entire document before submitting.

Part 1: Creating a Research Question

1. Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.

• Of the available choices, globalization and fair-trade are what my beliefs, values, and
assumptions led me to choose. Since I am a Business major, I value knowledge
surrounding business topics such as trade and globalization. I value ethics and doing
good for others so fair- trade was a logical way to narrow the topic of globalization. I
believed that fair-trade began recently so I was interested in challenging that belief by
learning about its history.

2. Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your
current event.

• Fair trade has been a part of globalization and the subsequent and substantial poverty
reduction seen throughout the world. Is it time to step back and reconsider the policies
surrounding globalization, trade, and fair trade? Are there solutions to better address
those that are still stuck
in poverty due to inequality in trading? Current consumer trends point to not just a
continuation of fair-trade demand but an increase. According to Fair Trade America,
consumers who are already considered fair trade shoppers are willing to pay substantially
more money for goods with the fair-trade distinction (Lamb, 2021). Moving forward,
demand for Fair-Trade is tied to human rights, fair wages, sustainability, gender equality,
and brand transparency.

3. Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question.
• I utilized information from Fair Trade America to help confirm my suspicions about the
elevated costs of fair-trade goods. From there, I questioned whether that additional
money is being utilized effectively and efficiently.

Part 2: Building Context to Address
Questions

1. Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.

• Fair trades historical context can be viewed politically, socially, and economically.
While each of these lens’ have served as important motivators for the growth and
continuation of fair trade, economics stands on top as the most important. During my
research I have found that there are economic benefits to those that sell fair trade coffee,

, but only for some of the workers. The poorest workers do not receive an economic
benefit (Nunn, 2019). During the 1940’s when fair
trade started to get a foot hold, it was surrounded by the rampant racism and sexism of
the time.
2. Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
