In this paper I will address the evolution of democracy from the time of President
Jefferson to President Jackson. Included there will be a description of how the American
Republic was different under each president, what caused the change in differences, and the
significance of these changes and how they effected future development.
How was the form of the American Republic different under Jackson than it was under
Jefferson?
Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson had very different viewpoints that caused a shift
in the American Republic with each of their presidency’s. Thomas Jefferson wanted the

American government to have more democracy, he wanted a less radical democracy than

Jackson. “Jefferson’s concept of democracy is articulated across four broad themes: social

equality, economic equality, freedom, and radical vision, but he also fails in each case to carry

the vision through” (muse.jhu.edu). Jefferson failed at following through with these visions
because America was growing at such a rapid pace, but this was also extremely important

without the growth and the land people would be forced to become wage laborers instead of self-

sufficient farmers. Without the rapid purchase of land Jefferson feared over-crowding would
happen. This is where when Jackson came into the presidency, he promised to help keep the

frontier their own, that was one of his Democratic promises (Wulf, 2006). Jefferson wanted a
government by the common people, he had confidence that the common man could run our

government. Jefferson wanted the states’ rights to be protected and not have a powerful central

government. “Jefferson did not want the national government to overpower the states and take all
the power” (Yaroslav, 2019). During Jefferson’s presidency he said only upper class, or the

higher privileged white men who owned property were allowed to vote; while during Jackson’s
presidency he said that all white men no matter what their social status was, they were allowed to
