U6a1: Case Study - Consuela
Consuela is a 19-year-old woman who resides in the United States illegally.
Currently, Consuela has not applied for her citizenship, as she has been living with her
boyfriend, Ramone. My learner, Rachel, has brought to my attention that, over the last
few sessions she has noticed Consuela exhibiting a significant amount of anxiety. Rachel
informed me that Consuela's boyfriend, Ramone, is part of a violent street gang and is
physically abusive towards Consuela. Furthermore, Consuela claims that Ramone and
his gang are planning to ambush a rival street gang, in which Ramone is forcing Consuela
to take part in.
As a faculty supervisor of this non-profit mental-health clinic, I have a
responsibility to protect my employees and the clients that we serve. Further action is
required in order to protect Consuela and the potential ambush to the rival street gang.
Federal, State, and Local Guidelines
The American Psychological Association (APA), along with the State of
Pennsylvania, provides a code of conduct that requires the necessary actions that must
take place in order to ensure that those involved complies with and maintains a high level
of professional integrity. Due to the significant nature of this case, the following
guidelines are applicable: APA; the Pennsylvania State Code of Conduct which sets forth
rules and regulations psychologists must follow in order to obtain and maintain the
highest forms of integrity and dignity; Women's Rights Against Violence, immigration
policies, Community College of Philadelphia (CCP), anti-gang support, and the
Philadelphia Police Department.
