Application of Statistics in Healthcare
Health statistics is the study of human health and disease processes. Health statistics are
numeric information about some facet of health. Researchers use these statistics to see patterns
of diseases within a population. This information can then help in determining out who is at risk
for diseases, finding ways to control disease and in deciding which diseases should be studied
(National Institute of Health, 2019-a). The data collected from both observation and numeric
measurement enable healthcare decision-makers to plan and implement policies that benefit
patients and the organization. The development of new medicine begins with statistical analysis.
Data are collected and analyzed during clinical trials to weigh products benefits and risks.
Quality
Statistics are essential to health care organizations when measuring performance
successes and failures. By creating standards of service excellence based on statistical data,
quality improvement managers can measure future outcomes. Evidence-based medicine (EBM)
is "the conscientious, explicit, judicious and reasonable use of modern, best evidence in making
decisions about the care of individual patients" (National Institute of Health, n.d., para.1). EBM
policies are crucial to deciding how best to provide health care and promote health within a
population and are derived from statistical data. For quality improvement to be meaningful it
must be data-driven: If it cannot be measured, improvements cannot be made.
Safety
Statistics play a critical role in the area of patient safety. According to The Center for
Patient Safety (n.d.), each year approximately 2 million new hospital-acquired infections
resulting in nearly 100,000 deaths (Bernazzani, 2018). Additionally, the financial costs
