Psychological profiling is an essential element, especially in the justice system,
taking into account the nature of the crimes that occur on a daily basis and the
psychological aspects that bring about these crimes. In this context, understanding some
of the psychological issues that the criminal may have opens the door to understanding
them on a deeper level and, as such, make it easier to catch them and incarcerate them to
bring down the crime rate. In this context, there are a lot of criminal profiles associated
with the justice system in connection to the different psychological elements that drive
people into crime. Some of these profiles include psychopathy, mental illnesses, sexual
motivation, terrorism, and others. As such, it is advisable to understand the psychological
stressors that lead people to commit crimes.
This paper will be based around the criminal profile of Richard Ramirez, who was
considered a psychopathic serial killer. Some of his crime included burglary, rape and
killings in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Most of his victims ranged from age 9 to 83
and did not have a preference for gender (Carlo, 2013). His Killings were brutal and at
times referred to as sinister, and the pubic held the idea that such killings fascinated him.
However, these behaviors could have originated from an emotional point of view taking
into account that when he was 11 years old, he witnessed his cousin murder his wife and
was asked to join in the clean up later. Such an event could have a dangerous effect
which could turn one into a psychopathic killer. As such, this work will be based around
the profile of a psychopathic killer based on the developmental, biological and learning
factors and also review the trial of such a serial killer in the justice system.
