Bullying can be termed as verbal or physical aggression that is repeated over time.
Bullying occurs in different settings, including schools or workplaces and therefore,
affects a lot of people in different aspects of their lives. Furthermore, bullying also occurs
for people of different ages, with some of them being the bullies while others become the
victims of physical or verbal aggression. There are different types of bullying, such as
physical bullying which is mainly centered on the element of assault and could have
severe effects on the victim. Another type of bullying is verbal bullying which involves
the use of words to hurt others and is considered the most common type of bullying
(Rivers & Smith, 1994). Reactive bullying involves the bully responding to being a
victim of bullying and as such, feels inclined to bully other people as well. Social
bullying is also another type and involves harming someone’s social reputation and
causing humiliation. The final type of bullying is cyberbullying, and it is very common in
the contemporary world due to the present technological advancements.
Children, just like people from different age groups, are subject to bullying, which
mainly occurs at schools. However, much attention is not always given to the aspect of
bullying among children and as such, continued bullying could have a catastrophic
turnout of events judging by the short term and long term effects of bullying on the
children (Aluede et al., 2008). One of the effects of bullying on children is social
isolation. This mainly results from the fear of being bullied, and as such, children could
opt to stay alone rather than becoming too social with others, which could open them to a
possibility of bullying. Moreover, social isolation could also be connected to the element
of shame, which comes from bullying and as such, it is expected for the bullied children
to isolate themselves from other in regards to the shame of the fact that they got bullied.
