SAMY SOCIOLOGY
Agents Of Socialization
Socialization is something that occurs throughout our lives. But most socialization occurs
in childhood. The agents that influenced me the most during that phase were family, peers,
school, and mass media. Family and school were the most important agents of socialization.
Family
As an infant, I think that I was utterly dependent on others for my survival. My parents
were responsible for teaching me how to function and care for myself. The rest of my family
also taught me the close relationships, group life, and how I will be obligated to share resources.
They also provided me with my first support system of values, beliefs, and norms, which reflects
my social status, ethnic group, and religion. My family provided me with love and care which
helped me in growing emotionally, socially and physically as well.
School
The school was and still is an essential agent of socialization to me. The school represents
a formal and conscious effort by society to socialize the young. The schools socialize the values
that they communicate to a child, and the teachers act as models. In school, I learned what
prepared me to a large extent for the world of work. I enhanced my social skills through my
interaction with teachers, staff, and other students.
My peers in school gave me a chance to develop the social skills that I needed later in
life. In school, I learned how to respect the old and those younger than me. Through interaction
with people at school, I was told how to obey rules, and I was rewarded when I excelled and
learned how to behave in public places. These values have enabled me to function well within
my culture.
