THE APPLICATION LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT IN COUNSELING
Kohlberg's theory is based on a series of moral dilemmas and moral judgment. This
theory focuses on six levels: reconvention, conventional, post-conventional, social contract, and
law and order (Zhang & Zhao 3). The Obedience and punishment orientation is the first stage of
the theory, and it focuses on how morality is externally controlled. Kohlberg’s theory focuses on
how children conform to the stipulated laws to avoid the consequences. This theory states that
students can flow the rules imposed to avoid adverse outcomes such as punishments or even gain
a certain reward (Zhang & Zhao 3). The theory of moral development can be applied in schools
where rules, standards, and consequences are applied. This theory can be essential for school
counselors because it would help the practitioners to track student’s moral reasoning by
examining the six stages. The first stage would help the counselor to examine children's ability to
submit to the authority. Additionally, the stage of individuals and exchange can assist the
counselor to focus on the student’s conformity to social rules and how it would affect their life.
The counselor can use the third stage on good interpersonal relationships to examine the
student’s ability to make decisions that are far from the societal expectations (Zhang & Zhao 4).
Notably, the counselor can apply the theory of maintaining the social order to examine the
individual’s views on the laws and how they apply them to improve self-discipline. Based on the
theory, the counselor can apply social contract and individual's rights to evaluate how the student
understand the community perspective before making a vital decision. Based on these facts, a
