Discovering the Advanced Practice Nurse
In this paper I will discuss what I have discovered regarding advanced practice nursing through this course. I will focus mainly on the role of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), because FNP is what I am enrolled in school for. I will also tell what has inspired me to become a FNP and what influenced my decision. During this course I also interviewed a friend of mine who is a FNP , Christina Hughes. I will summarize that interview with her and
describe the state requirements for South Carolina where I live and plan to work. I will then
talk about the leadership style that I possess and how it contributes to being a transformational leader. I will also discuss and take a position on Medicare reimbursement for FNPs compared to medical doctors. Advanced Practice Roles in Nursing The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) can be defined as “ advanced practice registered nurses who work autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to deliver family-focused care .” (GraduateNursingEDU.org, 2017) FNPs have a graduate level degree as well as experience in the family care setting (GraduateNursingEDU.org, 2017). Given this they are qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems. Given this FNPs are able to work in a number of settings and not limited to a certain specialty. They are able to work in doctor’s offices, clinics, hospitals, schools, and even the home setting (GraduateNursingEDU.org, 2017). The hallmark of the (Nurse Practitioner) NP is the breadth of health issues that they encounter (Hamric, 2013). The FNP has several core competencies. One of those competencies is independent practice. This competency implies that every NP is responsible for the care that they
provide to individuals (Hamric, 2013). Scientific foundation is a core competency that a NPs
