This paper will discuss the application of statistics in the health care system; its importance to
the quality and safety of care, health promotion and leadership. It also describes the utilization of
statistical knowledge in an organization; statistical data collection method, its use in daily
operations and in making decisions.
THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICS IN HEALTH CARE
Just as any other profession/system, it is important to collect data before and after any
process improvement initiative in order to check and compare the level of success. Statistics is
the fundamental of medicine; the current level of performance and success cannot be measured
without the utilization of data. Also, it is used in carrying out clinical trials to improve the
standard of practices and patient outcomes.
In the health care system, focus is on the utilization of quality data, and on responses
relating to time on the duration of tasks. For examples; when hospital sets goals by trying to
shorten the time of recovering from surgeries, the time between hospital-acquired infections, the
duration to get test results, and other metrics. It involves the utilization of a number of binary
data.
Conditions and happenings in a health care locality can be compared with state, national
and international trends by establishing statistical trends and trials. The application of statistics in
health care provides experimental data to help in the distribution of public and private funds and
to establish the focus of research procedures. For example; incident of diseases, accidents, cure
rates, physician or hospital charges, malpractice, mortality rates, medications, treatments, or
medical devices, the main source for statistical health data are often on government, international
