What is the function of connective tissue? ” Connective tissue provides strength for structure and support. ”4. What is the function of muscular tissue? ” The main function is movement due to them being the only tissue that can contract and relax. ”5. What is the function of nervous tissue? ” This tissues function is to send simulese and receive information from the brain and spinal cord. ”6. Describe sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and hair with regard to the function of the skin. ” The sweat glands are what produce sweat in reaction to heat or stress. List the similarities and differences of the layers of the epidermis. ” They are all a protectant and each are composed of different types of cells. The differences between them are all of different sizes and thickness. Experiment 1: Microscopic Slide Examination of Tissue ”Identify the following tissue slides: ” A- Simple squamous epithelium B- Simple cuboidal epithelium C- Adipose connective tissue D- Reticular connective tissue E- Elastic cartilage tissue F- Cardiac muscle tissue G- Skeletal muscle tissue H- Nervous tissue Lab 5 Tissues and Skin BIO201L Lab 5 Tissues and Skin BIO201L Lab 5 Tissues and Skin BIO201L Post-Lab Questions ”1. What is the difference between simple, stratified and pseudostratified epithelial tissue? ” Simple contains only one cell layer and each cell is attached to the bottom membrane. While stratified consists of multiple layers. Pseudostratified also consists of multiple layers in structure, but is only a single layer of cells. ”2. Describe the cell shape of squamous, cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells. ” Squamous cells are more wide than tall. Cuboidal are exactly how it sounds which is that their width and height are the same and are shaped like a cube. The columnar cells are taller than they are wide like a skyscraper. ”3. Does the number of cell layers or cell shape play a role in the function of epithelial tissue? Provide three examples. ” Yes, the number of cell layers and the cell shape do play a role in their function. Three examples of this would be squamous cells, cuboidal cells, and columnar cells. Squamous cells can be found in the lining of the heart and lungs. Cuboidal cells can be found in the kidneys and the columnar cells can be found in the gastrointestinal tract.
