The Glass Menagerie:
Character Analysis
___
Notes
1. LAURA WINGFIELD:
"Laura, though largely silent, is still very much the author of her own narrative." Discuss
some of the ways Williams presents the character of Laura in the light of this
description.
● Laura isn't rebellious or at least outrightly rebellious like Tom
● She is very highly influenced by her mother but there is still firmness and resistance
within her character. However, this manifests in a manner that is not very noticeable.
● For example, she quits going to the Rubicam Business College because it makes her sick
and uncomfortable. She doesn't like going to Business School even though her mother
has a lot of expectations from her.
● "I just went walking", she tells her mother when she asks what she's been doing all this
time. Amanda is furious after learning that she's quit college.
● She seems very satisfied and at peace with her decision and comes clean very
clearly, "I couldn't go back up. I threw up on the floor!".
● She delves deep into the details of what she's been doing, "sometimes I did
without lunch and went to the movies."
● Therefore, she isn't very sorry about her decision and this can be very clearly
seen here.
● So she is quite rebellious, wants things to go her own way but she's also very
highly sensitive.
