The Influence of a Healing Hospital
Across the world hospitals and health care workers strive to create an environment for
patients to be treated in and to be healed in. The goal of every hospital to is to provide high
quality care that is efficient, effective and yield the best outcomes possible. Some hospitals
would even go as far as to say that yes, they create an environment of healing for their patients.
However, there are several differences between providing patients an environment to heal in and
a healing environment as well as providing a healing culture.
This paper will identify and examine the components that are necessary to create a
healing hospital and how the healing hospital is related to spirituality. This paper will identify the
barriers and challenges in creating a healing environment and biblical support for health care
professionals to create healing hospitals for their patients.
Components of a Healing Hospital and Spirituality
To create a true healing hospital one must understand the three key components that go
into creating such an environment: physical environment is healing, the culture promotes healing
by using the philosophy Radical Loving Care, and the technology and work design that is used
promotes a healing environment. Most hospitals promote a healing environment, say their work
flow is efficient and that their caregivers provide a healing culture; however, many are not true
healing hospitals as they do not embody or encompass all three components in the care they
deliver to their patients. To be a healing hospital and to receive such a designation and
recognition is truly an honor and privilege for both patients and employees. This designation is
awarded by the Baptist Healing Trust in Nashville, Tennessee once all three components are met,
embraced and embodied in practice. (Eberst, 2008)
