Faith Diversity and Health Care Professionals
Human beings are unique individuals with their own individual worldviews including
their own morals, values, ethics, and views on religion and spirituality. They are guided by these
characteristics and beliefs, both in their personal and professional lives, as well as in the health
care decisions they make. Every day health care professionals work with patients of many
different cultures and faiths, and must ask patients directly about their faith and the role their
faith will play in their health care. Health care professionals strive to create an environment that
patients can be treated and healed in; however, in order to do so, health care professionals must
incorporate the beliefs and the religion of the patient in treating patients physically, mentally,
emotionally and spiritually.
The goal of this paper is to analyze and explore the worldviews of Christianity and
Buddhism, and compile a comparative of their philosophies towards providing health care. This
paper will identify and examine the components that are important to each belief and religion
including meditation, prayer, hope and overall beliefs, and what is important to patients who are
being cared for by others whose worldview and spiritual beliefs differ from their own. This paper
will also explore and discuss the author’s own spiritual perspective on healing, insights from the
research performed and how this knowledge can be applied in health care.
The Christian and Buddhism Worldview
In order to understand the worldviews for Christianity and Buddhism, one must first look
at and answer the seven questions that are the key components and framework that make up what
a worldview is. James Sire identified the seven questions as what is prime reality, what is the
nature of the world around us, what is a human being, what happens to a person at death, why is
it possible to know anything at all, how do we know what is right or wrong and what is the
