Case Study of Moral Status
This case study hits close to me because I am in Labor & Delivery and we deal with
patients that have to come to the decision to continue their pregnancy knowing their child is
going to have some sort of possible deformity or a disease that is going to prevent them from
living much long after birth or that they will live a life full of pain and struggles. As a Christian I
put what happens in the hands of God and I personally do not believe in abortion. As my time as
a nurse has passed I have come to be more understanding. I am a L&D nurse and I chose this
career so who am I to judge women and their families with what they do? I am there to care for
them during the labor and delivery no matter what the outcome is. Yes I can refuse the
assignment based on my beliefs but my thought then turns to the question I stated above. In this
case I feel like all 5 theories play some sort of part in this case study between the mother and
father of this baby and the doctor.
The five theories that were reviewed are based on human properties, cognitive properties,
moral agency, sentience, and relations. The fetus would be under the theory of human properties
based on the fact the fetus is conceived from its human parents. The fetus did not make the
choice to be conceived nor did the fetus make the decision to have the deformity of no arms and
the possibility of having Down syndrome (Grand Canyon University [GCU], 2015, para. 8). The
doctor involved in this case study would fall under the theory of moral agency because he is not
mentally linked to this baby. He is looking at this situation as a problem that he wants to solve
by terminating the pregnancy. The theory is based on him having the capability to make
judgment on right vs. wrong (GCU, 2015, para. 9). For the parents of the fetus I would say they
each fall under two theories and those are sentience and relations. The mother wants to trust in
God’s plan while the dad is thinking he will support her no matter what decision she makes but
