Why is family considered the most important Agent of Socialization?
A family is a group of people related by blood. It is the smallest unit of a society
usually consisting of the father, the mother and the children.
A family is the basic foundation of a community; the beginning of a people or
society. Here, we move from the father, mother, children to grandfather,
grandmother, grandchildren, uncle, aunty, cousins, nephews and, hereby creating
a community of related people or a society.
The norms and value we grow up with is from the family we are born into. They
are the first point to teach a child what he or she needs to know about his or her
background, the way to conduct or behave in the society and the right path of life
for the benefit of himself/herself and the community at large.
A family is the most influential in a child’s life as they depend on their parents for
feeding, clothing, protection, and moral standards.
A family gives the child an identity in the society, within and without. Also, a child
has a sense of belonging in the society and is regarded as a responsible person
and not an outcast or otherwise. The family passes social identity to their children
in the community they live in areas of religion, class, background, and ethnicity
When there is union between two families in terms of marriage, a family brings
socialization between the families involved and even related families in the
community.
