II. Objectives
● To confirm the presence of the group IV cations using flame tests.
● To determine the characteristics of the cations while undergoing different
processes.
III. Introduction
The Group IV cations are calcium Ca2+, strontium Sr2+, and barium Ba2+. It is also
called the Alkaline Earth Group. The cations in Group IV have less distinctive
chemical properties than the cations of the other groups. So, their detection also
depends on physical behavior such as flame tests. The values of the solubility
product constants of each of these cations are too close to permit sharp
separation and identification, therefore it is necessary to employ the flame tests,
as they are more specific, especially by comparison with known solutions of
these cations.
