LAB/LAC: Design and develop 2D and 3D digital graphics
Introduction
In this assignment, I am going to design and show a 2D and 3D model theater for
Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’. I will design the stage set to be
presented by the companies for their upcoming presentation.
B.P3 Produce designs for 2D and 3D digital graphic products to meet the
client’s brief.
Planning digital graphics
- Client brief
You have recently started an internship as an IT specialist at a visual arts
company and part of your role is to encourage greater use of IT in the company’s
productions. Artistic Director and her team you have been asked to develop
some 2D and 3D graphics for the company’s upcoming theater presentation of
Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’
You have been asked to develop some 2D and 3D graphics for the company’s
upcoming theater presentation of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being
Ernest’. You need to design and develop a 3D model for the stage set for the
play. The design should include the scenery painted on the backdrop
entrance/exit doors to the flat and the furniture in the flat.
- Own brief and research
The Artistic Director and her team asked me to develop a 2D and 3D theater
model to be presented. To create a sketch of a 2D theater model, I am going to
use drawing software to give an idea of what the stage will look like. For the 3D
model, I am going to use Sketchup, it is a great software that will allow me to
create the 3D model, modify, add items, change color, and more functions.
- Brainstorming
Brainstorming is one of the first techniques that should be used because it helps
to gather ideas, which helps later on in improvements or management. The
brainstorming will start with discussion, writing the ideas, and thinking of how to
solve the task.
- Mood boards

The mood boards will help me to gather some images to take ideas and manage
pieces of texts and materials to complete the task given. This technique is
another way to gather ideas, which helps to see all the ideas gathered together
on the board.
- Thumbnail sketching
I will do a thumbnail sketching, which means I will do a quick sketch to make an
idea of the design plan of the idea. The sketch will not look perfect as it will be a
quick sketch, but it is helpful to observe it and get more ideas which will help to
add more items to the sketch.
- Processing and editing techniques
To develop a figure of the stage, there are steps to be followed which is the
processing. The process will help me to build the design of the stage step by
step, for example for the 2D I will draw my first line of the stage and the second
line, when the design of the stage will be completed I will draw other items on the
stage. For the 3D design, the process will be the same but the method of the
drawing will be different as I will see the line drawn three-dimensional, I will need
to calculate the distance of each line to another. For editing the stage there are
good techniques, such as I will be able to stretch the line to make it bigger, and
adding furniture where I will need to modify the sizes.

The brief asks to develop 2D and 3D graphics for the company’s upcoming
theater presentation of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Ernest. The
requirement is to design and develop a 3D model for the stage for the set.
The setting is a flat belonging to one of the characters. The stage is
approximately 10 m wide and 9m deep The height of the backdrop (which covers
the back wall of the stage) should be around 5m. The design should include the
scenery painted on the backdrop entrance/exit doors to the flat and the furniture
in the flat. Using part of the backdrop to the stage and additional graphic assets
create a design for a 2D graphic to be used as background artwork in the
promotional.

Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Ernest, is for young adults as the story is
about humor, drama, and young adult literature. The design of the 3D model and
also the 2D model will impress the audience, mainly the companies and the
people who are experts in IT because the appearance of the design is important,
it gives the first impression to the audience and then to observe better.
- Purpose
The theme of the show gives an educational and historical purpose, which is
interesting entertainment. Creating and 2D and 3D design of the stage is made to
give an idea of how the stage will look like and help plan the stage for the set to
play, this gives the idea to the Artistic Director and her team about how the stage
needs. The main purpose is to present graphics for the company’s upcoming
theater presentation.
- Client requirements.
The stage is approximately 10 m wide and 9m deep The height of the backdrop
(which covers the back wall of the stage) should be around 5m. The design
should include the scenery painted on the backdrop entrance/exit doors to the
flat and the furniture in the flat.
Research
- Market research
The companies will give feedback which will be helpful for the market research
because this will let us know what the companies want, and what is the target
audience. The opinions of other companies show the interest in the specific
product which will allow me, Artistic Director, and her team to understand the
improvements and what we can add more to have the audience's interest. With
the right client requirements, there will be a high interest in the audience.
- Process planning
The planning process is a circle that follows the planning process step by step,
such as creating a plan, implementing the plan, monitoring the plan, setting
goals, gathering data, analyzing data, and starting again. This is research to
have a type of planning process, which can help to develop the plan.
