Leopold’s Maneuver

Given simulated situations/conditions, the students will be able to systematically assess, observe and
perform abdominal examination of pregnant mothers.
Specific Objectives:
1. Identify and perform the steps of Leopold’s maneuver.
2. Identify nursing considerations in performing Leopold’s maneuver.
3. Determine the proper position and presentation of the fetus
4. Perform accurate documentation

1. Prepared all the materials/supplies to be used.

c. Lubricant/KY jelly
d. Tissue Paper
e. Plastic container for disposing used materials.
2. Checks identification band, introduces self and explains the procedure.
Asks the patient to empty her bladder. Wash hands.
3. Provide privacy, exposing only the abdomen to be assessed.
4. Adjusts the bed to a comfortable height. Drape patient properly to maintain
privacy. Place a small pillow under the head for comfort. Place patient in
dorsal recumbent position, supine with knee flexed.
