,
, The basic disease processes that affect the seromucous glands are
Reactive and obstructive lesions,
Infections,
Immunopathologic disorders,
and neoplasms.
A common feature of all of these processes is swelling of the gland.
Pain is a common accompanying symptom in infectious and obstructive lesions,
whereas immunologic and neoplastic disorders are usually characterized by
painless enlargement.
, Acinar secretions move from the intercalated ducts to the
larger striated duct, both lined by cuboidal epithelium. The
saliva is further transported, with help from contractile
myoepithelial cells, into the stratified, columnar, extralobular
ducts, ultimately emerging from the mucosa through the
excretory duct lined by stratified squamous epithelium.
