INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE IN PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Inflammation is the body’s reaction to injury or invasion by disease-producing organism. The inflammatory is a proactive body
response that focuses host defense components at the site of infection to eliminate microorganism and heal damaged tissues.
THE BODY’S INFLAMMATORY PROCESS
A. A major events in the inflammatory response
The inflammatory response is triggered by the invasion of pathogens or tissue injury
B. Classic symptoms of inflammation
To inflate means “to set on fire”, clinically the inflammatory response is characterized by the five classic symptoms of
inflammation at the site of infection or injury
INFLAMMATION IN PERIODONTAL DISEASE
2 forms of inflammatory periodontal disease
1) GINGIVITIS - Is an inflammatory disease process that results in reversible damage to the gingival tissues
2) PERIODONTITIS - Is an inflammatory disease process that results in some extent of permanent destruction to the tissue of
the periodontal ligament and resorption of the alveolar bone
PATHOGENESIS OF BONE DESTRUCTION
The pattern of bone destruction that occurs depends on the pathways that the inflammatory process takes as it spreads from the
gingival into the alveolar bone
Patterns of alveolar bone and periodontal ligament:
A. Reduction in bone height
1. In health and gingivitis – the crest of the alveolar bone is located 1-2 mm apical to (below) the CEJ of the teeth
