Topic 2 DQ 1
How could you better implement descriptive epidemiological methods in your current or
future practice? Provide an example of an instance when you might use descriptive epidemiology
to improve care. Explain. Support your response with relevant literature.
Descriptive epidemiology is the first step in studying a disease because it evaluates data
about person, place and time. Personal information includes age, gender, race, ethnicity,
education, socio-economic status, and occupation. Place relates to location such as work,

residence, school, or recreation facility. Time include trends, such as: secular or long-term, cyclic
changes or periodic fluctuations, and epidemic disease outbreaks or short-term fluctuations.

and determinants. It provides a way of organizing and analyzing these data to describe the
variations in disease frequency among populations by geographical areas and over time (i.e.,
person, place, and time) [ CITATION Lon18 \l 1033 ].
An example of instance when I may use descriptive epidemiology as a DNP prepared
nurse would be studying the cause of increase rate of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract
Infections in patients with indwelling urinary catheter on my unit. Minimize urinary catheter use
and duration of use in all patients, particularly those at higher risk for CAUTI or mortality from
catheterization such as women, the elderly, and patients with impaired immunity (Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). First step would be to collect data on the demographic
(age, race, gender, education) of the patients, time or frequency of infection rate (monthly,
yearly, etc.), and then location (hospital units) of occurrence rate, and if catheter is inserted by a
trained staff using sterile procedure. If patients are having increased infection rate, then questions
