Facial: 3 big things (muscles of facial expression, taste of 2/3 of tongue, and glands of
the head), 1 little thing

Function- moves facial muslces, protets from loud noise
Location- facial motor nucleus (pons)
Projects to- muscle of facial expression, posterior belly of digastric and sylohyoid
muscle, stapedius muscle (middle ear)

Function- lacrimal and nasal gland secretions, submandibular and sublingual glands
Location: superior salivatory nucleus (pons)
Projects to: pterygopalaine ganglia, then to lacrimal and nasal glands, submandibular
ganglia then to submandibular and sublingual glands

Function- (little thing) tympanic membrane and external ear canal sensations, taste from
anterior 2/3 of tongue
Location Geniculate ganglia
Project to: spinal trigeminal nucleus (medulla) and solitary nucleus (rostral part)
(medulla)

Facial nerve function summarized - 1) all the muscle of facial expression, plus
stylohyoid, posterior belly of the digastric muscles and stapedius muscle in middle ear
2) all the glands of the head that get parasympathetic innervation, except the parotid
salivary gland
3) the bulk of your functional taste in (anterior 2/3 of tongue)

All the motor component branches of the facial nerve come out what foramen? -
stylomastoid foramen

All the sensory parasympathetic preganglionic fibers component branches of the facial
nerve come out what? - hiatus of the greater petorosal nerve

All the taste and parasympathetic component branches of the facial nerve come out
what where? - petritympanic fissure (chorda tympani nerve)

The facial nerve has three major nuclei in the pons called: - 1) motor nucleus of the
facial nerve-muscles of facial expression (pons)
2) superior salviatory nucleus- stimulates tears, and submandibular and sublingual
salivary glands
3) solitary nucleus- special sense of taste
