Keeping young adults ages 18-29 at a consistent healthy weight status
Introduction
Nutritional intake and weight status is a matter that each and every individual needs to
take serious in their lifetime. Healthy People 2020 has shown numerous studies proving that the
consumption of healthful diets and the maintenance of healthy body weight can and will reduce
the risk of health conditions.
In this paper I will discuss strategies on how to keep and increase the proportion of young
adults (18-29) who are at a healthy weight. I will support this by discussing articles that tie into
this goal. This matter is important to health promotion because maintaining a healthy weight
gives an advantage in lowering the risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure
and some cancers.
Topic Description
Young adulthood is a critical period of development where decisions made can make long
lasting implications on the individual. Keeping and increasing the percentage of young adults
who are at a healthy weight is important because this particular age group face demands greater
than recent generations have in terms of global changes, workforce changes, advancement in
technology and much more. It is safe to say this generation would have a harder time grasping
the importance of keeping an active and healthy routine.
Research by The World Health Organization show that in 2014, more than 1.9 billion
adults, 18 years and older, were overweight; the same reports show that young adults at ages 18-
29 have the worst health profile than adolescents and adults in their late 30s. Of these over 600
million were obese; many of these health problems are preventable as many of them stem from
poor health decisions.
