It seems that a lot of children and adolescents today are getting bigger and bigger and not
just in height, in weight. Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that is becoming more
and more of an epidemic in todays world. It is affecting our children and adolescents today a lot
more than it did 10-15 years ago. Many children and adolescents today don’t eat a very healthy
diet and don’t get or maintain the necessary levels of physically activity needed for optimal
health. Its rare to see kids outside playing on a playground or riding their bikes along the streets.
Nowadays they seem to be more focused on sitting in front of a computer or a tablet playing
games. The advancements in technology and ways to order food such as Uber Eats have also
made it easier for people to have access to the world of fast food without even leaving their
home.
Obesity is defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Na-
tional Heart Lung and Blood Institute as “having an excess amount of body fat distributed
around the body” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018. National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute [NHLBI], 2016). According to data collected from a study by Hales,
Carroll, Fryar, and Ogden nearly 1 in 5 school age children and young people in the United
States suffer from obesity (2017, p.3). The study and results gave national estimates between
2015–2016 on the prevalence of obesity by sex, age, and racial ethnicity. This study also showed
that it is quite likely that obese children who don’t try to maintain or lower their weight will
grow up and become obese adults and face more health problems down the line. This is why
whether a child or adolescent is at risk of becoming overweight or currently overweight that pre-
ventative measures are taken as soon as possible to try and help reduce any further health risks.
This study was very helpful and informative in showing the statistics of obesity among children
