Diabetes health promotion and prevention in Asian Americans

Introduction:
Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases that debilitates the lives of
Americans, which can be prevented or well-maintained through diet. In the Asian American and
Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, type 2 diabetes is one of the chronic diseases that the group
is most at risk for and with the highest prevalence in (“Profile: Asian Americans,” 2014). Type 1
diabetes is rare for this group, and is 5-10 times less likely seen compared to Non-Hispanic
Whites (King et al., 2012). The purpose of this paper is investigate the social determinants,
health barriers, and cultural standpoint associated with Asian Americans’ with type 2 diabetes,
and potentially develop plans to improve their health.
Topic Discussion:
Asian Americans (AA) are one of the most diversified racial categories with many
ethnicities, cultures, and languages. Among different racial groups, there is also a strong belief of
alternative concept of health compared to the Western world. Chinese Americans, largest
subgroup of AA at 23.8%, is one of the many subgroups influenced by the Eastern’s medicine of
balance in yin and yang, on the level of internal energy (King et al., 2012). Eastern medicine in
the form of herbal remedies most often times would be used first to balance energy at the first
count of disease. Foods are believed to have hot and cooling effects to the body (i.e. melons are
cooling to the body and ginger is hot to the body). Foods are either consumed or avoided to
promote the balance of yin and yang, which is believed to eventually lead to the promotion of
health and overall holistic well being. While herbal medicine may be beneficial, these diets
neither address daily carbohydrate intake nor adjustments.
To understand diabetes prevalence in this group, one must also understand the
disproportionate groups in terms of income and literacy. There are more than, “ 75% of Japanese,
