Healthy People 2020 is an initiative that was set forth by the United States to help aim in
promotions of preventing disease to all citizens. There have been multiple Healthy People
programs that date back to 1979, and have progressed to 2000, 2010, and finally giving us the
current program of Healthy People 2020. Each one progresses to a new set of goals that
surround the previous health initiative. Health care is a growing field and every year there are
new challenges that we face for disease prevention. These programs are set up to help us reach
those goals and make our economy and health care system the best it can be. In the Healthy
People 2020 initiative it discusses new studies that can be done to prevent disease such as
threats to maternal, infant and children’s health (Hesse, 2014). Mothers and their children are
so important, not just because they are human life, but because these mothers are raising their
children to be the future of our country. As my generation is called the millennials, we are at an
important stage because we are becoming the adults and the future of this world. Our health is
the utmost importance to our future.
The Targeted Population
Of all countries, the United States still has one of the fastest growing infant mortality
rates. Studies have been done to show the impact of infant mortality outcome from low birth
weight and preterm birth (Masho, 2001). The data that was revealed from this study in the
United states alone was extremely shocking. The threat of infant mortality and the health of
mothers and their children has increased 20 percent since 1990 (Pappas-Rogich, 2014). Even
though the infant death rate has reduced, the reduction is a slow pace compared to other
countries. In 2011 the United States was ranked the highest out of 46 countries at the end of
the year with infant mortality rates (Bolin, 2015).
