, In this assignment I will explain possible barriers that prevent individuals from following advice on
health and wellbeing. I will then discuss possible conflicts when promoting health and wellbeing.
Finally, I will evaluate the role of the media in promoting or influencing health and wellbeing.

P5- Explain possible barriers that prevent individuals from following advice on health and
wellbeing.

A barrier is something that is in place that prevents an individual from doing particular things. An
example of a barrier in this situation could be anything such as transport, income, disability. There
are many barriers that can prevent individuals from following advice on health and wellbeing such as
location, physical ability, time, employment, income, culture, education, social class, and peer
pressure.

An example of this is location. If an individual lives far from a hospital or clinic they may not be able
to get transport to a specific location to seek advice on health and wellbeing. “Where an individual
lives can have a huge impact on access to health promotion. For example, gyms may be hard to
reach in rural areas because of a poor bus service. The cost of travel could also be unaffordable.
Village stores may have fewer healthy food choices than a city supermarket.” (Ferreiro Peteiro et al.,
2016) This can implement negatively in an individual’s life as medical appointments and check-ups
will be missed and this results in gaps in their care. Furthermore, if the situation is that an individual
needs to lose excessive amounts of weight and is advised to go to weight loss classes such as
Slimming World they may not be able to get there each day due to the location they're in. If a person
lives far away from the place they need to go or they live far away from a bus stop, they may not be
able to get there especially if they don't drive or have any other close form of transport. This will
prevent them from following advice as they cannot get the advice in the first place.

Income is another barrier. The further an individual lives the higher cost transport would be. If an
individual has a low income they may not be able to afford the money for transport. This is a regular
occurrence for the elderly. The reason for this is because pension money is not great, and the money
needs to be used elsewhere. This barrier has increased considerably over the years. Due to low
income people may see this as a barrier as they cannot access clinics due to travel costs. A second
factor relating to income is if an individual is overweight and has been recommended to lose weight
and attend a weight loss session such as slimming world, it costs and due to them having a low
income they may not be able to afford the sessions on a weekly basis due to it being a company.
Employment is when someone has a job and is earning an income, yet it is a big issue with
overseeing health advice. This is because if a person is unemployed there is little money coming in
and the money that does needs to be limited so much that it cannot be sent on anything that isn't
needed. Travel prices are expensive to someone on a low income so money will not be wasted on
travel when they feel it is not needed. The likelihood of people eating unhealthier is growing and the
reason for this is because of food prices. Junk food such as cake, crips, fizzy drinks and fast food
restaurants are cheap and always have deals in relation to it being cheap. It is affordable for
someone on a low income. Thinking about this the prices of healthier foods such as fruit, water, and
vegetables they are fairly expensive, and a meal cannot be made with just singular sources such as
fast food. To eat healthy different foods, need to be bought to make a whole meal and this means
more food needing to be bought. Additionally healthier food is more expensive, and this is the
reason people tend to go to fast food. “The health of people with low incomes often suffers because
they can’t afford adequate housing, food, or childcare. Such living conditions, and the stress they
cause, can lead to higher rates of tobacco and alcohol use, and increase the risk of health problems
developing or worsening over time.” (Cunningham, 2022)
