“Our goal is to understand the human model, starting with the detectors – the eyes, ears, skin
receptors, and receptors in the nose and mouth – and then moving to the computer – the brain.”
“One of the things that you will learn as you study perception is that everything you see, hear, taste,
feel or smell is the result of the activity in your nervous system and your knowledge gained from past
experience.”

Onderscheid Sensation/Perception
Sensation: Simpel proces
Perception: Het opbouwen van ons begrip van de wereld (Moeilijkere processen)
Distale stimulus: Datgeen wat in de wereld gebeurt.
Proximale stimulus: Datgeen wat op je retina gebeurt.
The principle of transformation: Stimuli and responses created by stimuli are transformed, or
changed, between the distal stimulus and perception.
The principle of representation: Everything a person perceives is based not on direct contact with
stimuli but on representations of stimuli that are formed on the receptors and the resulting activity in
the person’s nervous system
Transduction: The transformation of one form of energy to another form.
Visual form agnosia: An inability to recognize objects. Mensen kunnen wel zien maar niet weten wat
het is (Oliver Sacks: De man die zijn vrouw voor een hoed hield).
