Effective classroom management is key to support learners to learn to their
full ability.
Aspects that influence classroom management are:
• Perspectives on teaching and learning
• The mentor’s perspective
3.2.1 A) Perspectives on teaching and learning
Your mentor’s perspective on teaching and learning will influence how
he/she manages the class, but also how he/she guides you and
interprets your observation of activities in the class.
Do you know who your mentor is? His/her experience will influence
his/her teaching philosophy and it will influence the guidance the
mentor gives you while observing.
Make an appointment with your mentor and complete the following information
after speaking to him/her.
Training as mentor (by whom and how much formal/informal, accredited or
not)
The mentor is fully educated. She obtained her Honours in Education and planning
to study Masters.
What are your expectations of the mentor?
To ensure that I reach my full potential and become the best teacher possible.
With their guidance they should encourage me on how to plan my lesson
effectively. I expect my mentor to discuss and share their responsibilities as a
teacher such as the daily schedules, routines and duties. I expect my mentor to
share the outcomes and goals they set for their learners and how, if not indeed
have reach them can ensure next time they will. I expect my mentor to discuss
the school policies with me as well and make sure I am included everywhere
as possible in the school. To support me with planning, classroom
management and encourage me to reflect on each lesson I observed to gain
more insight.
What can the mentor expect from you?
The mentor expects me to be punctual, and always report when I may be late or won’t
attend school the current day. She expects me to become involved in all activities or
functions in and outside the classroom for experience. She expects me to ask the date
and times such as meetings, the school rules and procedures etc. when unsure. She
expects me to be dependable, hardworking, to offer help wherever possible.

She has contributed a lot, she taught me procedure of teaching and guided me
in every step of the way.

I am a first year student at UNISA, I am currently studying BED in
Intermediate phase. I will complete my qualification within 4 years.
How do you manage your studies? (Employed full-time or not)
How I managed my studies was very difficult for me, as I was doing internship.
Those were challenges is I could not manage my studies with full note.
Description of any other appropriate experience/information, which has
had an influence on your teaching practice experience period
(observation).
It influenced my teaching practice experience because now not only did I
observed but had a chance to teach and stand in front as well. It forced me to
explain the content in such a matter for the learners to understand, to search
ways on how to help them. I read them stories and engaged in so many
activities. It helped me develop my leadership skills as well.

arrangements, placements, school visits, support, etc.
