Pediatric Case 7: Brittany Long (Core)
Guided Reflection Questions
Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Brittany Long’s case make you feel?
~I felt sorry for the patient because she appeared to be in a lot of pain.
Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario.
~I entered the room and identified my patient appropriately; I comforted her with juice and a toy and
was able to give her medication to reduce her pain.
Scenario Analysis Questions1
EBP What is the relationship between fluid and oxygen therapy in the treatment of sickle cell
anemia?
Increasing fluids helps thin the blood so that the clumps of sickled cells are able to disperse and
oxygenated blood is able to move past and reach all areas of the patient’s body.
EBP What complications might Brittany Long face if her symptoms are not recognized and treated in
a timely manner?
If the pain in her leg is not treated, her tissues will not receive the oxygen they need because the blood
cannot get through and the extremity will start to get necrotic.
EBP What methods of pain management did you use and what other methods should be considered
for Brittany Long, based on the latest evidence-based practice?
This patient was treated with acetaminophen and morphine. Other methods could be utilized to treat
her pain, such as applying heat to the extremity, physical therapy, relaxation techniques, guided
imagery, pet therapy and distraction techniques.
PCC/I What discharge teaching should be provided to assist Brittany Long’s mother with her home
care?
Her mother needs to be aware of the warning signs to look out for as well as have analgesics on hand for
pain management.
