How the internet started?
The internet has taken a huge role in shaping today’s society, especially being
under a global pandemic wherein the safest way to communicate and interact with one
another is through the world wide web. It was fortunate the internet was made and well-
developed as people were avoiding physical contact with one another to limit the
rampant virus. However, before becoming what it is now in the modern world, the
evolution of the internet made its way first with trips and turns.
- It started more than sixty years ago, in the year 1957, when computers only process
instructions one at a time—called “batch processing”—and was very time
consuming and inefficient.
- During that time too, computers increased in size and needed to be placed in
cooled rooms, hindering the developers from directly working with it and special
workers are called upon to connect them.
- As in that time period, programming also includes a lot of manual work, and
indirect connections result in a lot of bugs, they ought to find a way to solve this
problem.
- And so, a remote connection was installed. In this way, developers can work
directly with computers. Moreover, “time-sharing” was also brought to light and
became the first concept in computer technology, which meant sharing to
multiple users the processing power of one computer.
- In October of the same year, Sputnik 1 was sent to space, and with the fear of the
“Missile Gap”, America tried to secure its lead in technology, therefore, founding
the “Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA)” in February 1958.
- During this time, transferring of information was only conducted by people,
however, in DARPA, they planned to increase the passing of knowledge and avoid
