RESEARCH TITLE : A RESEARCH ON RATE OF ROAD ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE
POTENTIAL HAZARD WEATHERING IN MALAYSIA
, 1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of study
In the globalisation era, one of the priorities that be used for governments is road
safety. Toad safety is one of the important matters that focusing more for human
daily uses, health, and in economic sector. By referring to the World Health
Organization (WHO), the accidents occurred and caused death was about 1.3
million numbers of people annually. Only a fewer than 3400 fatal accidents per day
and the number of people suffer non-fatal injuries per year were about 30 to 50
million people. There are two factors that may affect the rate of accidents which are
the unsafe operation and the transport demand. These two factors purposely caused
increasing in the number of death tolls due to the road accidents each year (Andrey
et al. 2001). All this problem occurred because of the high number of vehicles on
the road, the road traffic characteristics, the behaviour of the road users, the vehicles
condition itself and the environmental influenced as well.
In this case, weathering will be focused as weathering is one of the
environmental risk factors that may consumed to the rate of road accidents. This is
occurred because of the changes of climate, especially in Malaysia. Nowadays,
Malaysian is facing an increasing in the daily temperature such as increasing in the
presents of extreme rainfall events like number of heavy rainfall days, rainfall
intensity and others already been noticed. This showing that the climate change
gives many impacts on road environment in Malaysia. Climate changing not only
involving the rainfall events, but it is also involving the other factors such as wind,
fogging, wind, sunlight, flood, temperature etc. Therefore, this study is to be carried
out the relatable of road accidents due to the potential hazard weathering among
road users in Malaysia.
1.2 Problem Statement
Weathering or weather phenomenon is one of the phenomena that cannot be control
as it is the nature phenomenon. The potential hazard weathering tends to increase
the rate of road accidents especially in Malaysia which facing the extreme changes
of weathering. Within a few years stated (2003-2007), about 37, 000 accidents had
occurred at PLUS (Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan) caused by the weather
condition. This also had been reported that all the changes in humidity may affects
the condition of roads such as the pavement friction, the lane obstruction, lane
submersion, the visibility. These unfortunately increasing the rate of accidents
rapidly especially during climate change seasons. Thus, this study needs to be
carried put by analysing the rate of accident occurred due to the weathering in order
to mitigate the number of accidents and to minimise the injury that occurred because
of the incidents.
