GRADE 1 LESSONS REQUIRED – ONE WEEK
LESSON 1: Mathematics for Foundation Phase teachers
In this activity, you must plan and present the lesson on the topic of your choice.
Consult the CAPS document and the ATP of each school. Use the instructions below,
and refer back to your module, MFP1501, to guide your planning and presentation.
• Use the lesson plan template provided to plan a Mathematics activity for Grade 1.
• This lesson must illustrate the range and features of objects.
• Provide evidence of the use of a variety of teaching and learning resources in the
relevant columns.
LESSON 2: Children’s literature
Prepare and present a lesson – Alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness. Choose any
book appropriate for Grade 1 learners (do not use a graded reader) and prepare a lesson to
teach alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness skills. On the lesson template, under
resources, make sure to mention the title and author of the book you have chosen for the
lesson. Provide sufficient evidence of resources
LESSON 3: English teaching for communication
Prepare a lesson presentation to teach writing processes. In your lesson, explain the criteria
of writing (ENC1501 p 58) and give your learners a short paragraph of an interesting story to
write. Make sure that you teach them how to write a text or words a few times. The wording
should be meaningful and accurate. The topic must suit the theme for the week followed
according to the CAPS or ISASA curriculum.
LESSON 4: Life Skills: Creative Arts – plan and present: Listening skills
Consult CAPS: Life Skills for the Foundation Phase, to familiarise yourself with the listening
skills that must be taught and assessed in Grade1 as part of Creative Arts. Choose any
listening skills as an outcome as indicated for the required term and plan and present your
lesson. Use the prescribed lesson template for your planning.
LESSON 5: Life Skills: Music, dance and drama
Plan and present: Musical concepts and movement. Choose any musical concept to
teach, for example, beat and rhythm, tempo, pitch, and the like. Plan a lesson in which you
will use percussion instruments, as well as structured and unstructured movement activities
to teach and consolidate the concept(s) you have chosen. Plan and present this lesson
together with your mentor teacher to ensure that you will have sufficient guidance in terms of
the availability of percussion instruments, as well as the grouping of learners. Your mentor
teacher may also need to assist with keeping discipline during the lesson, as lessons with a
highly interactive nature may become overwhelming.
