Kenneth Bronson VSim Guided Reflection Questions 1. How did the scenario make you feel? I actually felt pretty comfortable with this simulation. It still frustrates me at the lack of communication available. I also wasn’t certain as to how long I stay with the patient in order to monitor before ending the scenario. It seemed as though I was believing it to be more complicated than it was. I was thinking I was forgetting a whole bunch of steps. 2. What signs and symptoms led you to the conclusion that Kenneth Bronson was experiencing an allergic reaction? Almost immediately after beginning the infusion, Kenneth stated that it was getting hard to breathe and something wasn’t right. His heart rate started to skyrocket. He developed urticarial rashes on the chest. His respirations increased but his oxygen levels were decreasing. There was very apparent difficulty in breathing with audible wheezing. 3. Discuss the differences between mild, moderate, and severe anaphylactic reactions. Mild systemic reactions consist of peripheral tingling and a sensation of warmth, possibly accompanied by a sensation of fullness in the mouth and throat. Nasal congestion, periorbital swelling, pruritus, sneezing, and tearing of the eyes can also be expected. The onset of symptoms begins within the first 2 hours after the exposure (Hinkle & Cheever, 2017, p. 1065). Moderate systemic reactions may include flushing, warmth, anxiety, and itching in addition to any of the milder symptoms. More serious reactions include bronchospasm and edema of the airways or larynx with dyspnea, cough, and wheezing. The onset of symptoms is the same as for a mild reaction (Hinkle & Cheever, 2017, p. 1065). Severe systemic reactions have an abrupt onset with the same signs and symptoms described previously. These symptoms progress rapidly to bronchospasm, laryngeal edema, severe dyspnea, cyanosis, and hypotension. Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), abdominal cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures can also occur. Cardiac arrest and coma may follow. Severe reactions are also referred to as anaphylactic shock (Hinkle & Cheever, 2017, p. 1065
