Religion
Explain basic concepts and elements in religion in detail with help of relevant examples.
Religion
Emile Durkheim, a social theorist, described religion as a "unified system of ideas and
activities relevant to sacred things."
Basic concepts of religion
1. Animism:
Animism is the presence of a soul or spirit within material objects, trees, or animal
life.
Animism word is derived from the Latin phrase anima, which means "life" or "soul."
Animism is a belief in which there is a supernatural entity of souls which are cocerned about
humanity and can harm and assist human beings. There are crude beliefs about animism, but
most religions have beliefs in supernatural entities or souls in every object.
Example:
Spiritual beings in different material objects.
2. Animatism:
The faith that all objects (animate and inanimate) have an abstract, supernatural life
force that impacts places and people. Animatism is the belief that the natural world contains
immaterial, miraculous abilities. It also discusses the notion that everything has been
integrated with life energy, which gives each intimate object individuality or perception but
not a spirit, as animism does. It is a common belief in early communities.
Animatism is a belief held by many indigenous groups. They assume that praising
various objects will keep them safe from the forces of evil that surround them. These people
assume that the objects they worship possess supernatural powers bestowed by God to aid
them on the ground.
