ADHD Study Guide Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ● ADHD is a neurological disorder responsible for a range of problem behaviors. ● The DSM-5 manual introduces it as "attentional deficit/hyperactivity disorder, predominantly inattentive presentation" (Magnin, & Maurs, 2017, p.507). ● In learning, it causes difficulties in focusing on schoolwork, attending instructions, completing assignments, and social interaction. ● According to CDC, 6.1 million children are diagnosed with ADHD, and in the following proportions. ○ 388,000 children aged 2–5 years ○ 2.4 million children aged 6–11 years ○ 3.3 million children aged 12–17 years ■ Research establishes that boys are highly vulnerable to ADHD, with 12.9 percent, above the 5.6 percent of girls US Children diagnosed with ADHD since 2003.
