Photosynthesis Notes
What is Photosynthesis?
It is the process by which plants use sunlight to create
food in the form of sugar/glucose.
Photosynthesis Formula:
Sun Energy
6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2
(Carbon dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen)
Main Requirements:
➢ Sunlight
➢ Water
➢ Carbon
Products
➢ Energy / Sugar / Glucose
➢ Oxygen (by product)
Three Kingdoms which contains photosynthetic autotrophs:
1. Monera – Cyanobacteria
2. Protista – algae
3. Plantae
Side notes:
(Autotrophs: organisms that can make their own food)
, There are two sets of reaction in Photosynthesis
➢ The light Reaction (Energy Capturing)
➢ The Light Independent reaction (food making)
The light Reaction (Light-dependent Reaction)
What is light dependent reaction?
➢ The capturing of light energy to make two molecules
needed for the succeeding stage of photosynthesis.
➢ It takes place in the thylakoid membrane – pigments
that absorb light.
Photophosphorylation
➢ Using of light energy to make ATP from ADP.
Stages:
1. Light Absorption in Photosystem II
2. ATP Production
3. Formation of NADPH
Light Absorption in Photosystem II
➢ A photosystem absorbs light energy to energized
electrons.
➢ The energized electrons are transferred to the
carrier molecules within the thylakoid.
➢ The electron will be replaced by electron from
water, resulting to splitting of water and releasing of
oxygen.
