,The Cardiovascular System
• The cardiovascular system (also known as the
circulatory system) refers to the heart and blood
vessels of the body
• Blood is made up of cells and fluid that transport
oxygen and carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones,
waste products as needed
• Blood is the fluid compartment of the body that helps
regulate body temperature
• Other functions are carrying clotting factors to help
repair damage, and antibodies to fight infections

• Basic function is to pump blood throughout
the body carrying oxygen to, and carbon
dioxide away, from body’s cells
• Heart’s pumping action keeps blood flowing
through arteries, capillaries and veins
• Muscular wall of heart is called the
myocardium
• Heart consists of 4 chambers, 2 atria (singular
atrium) and 2 ventricles
