Preliminary Examination
First Semester, S. Y. 2021-2022
GEC004- Readings in Philippine History

Prepared by:
Shayne Antonette L. Matic

I. CREATION. (100 Points)

Directions: Attached to this preliminary examination are copies of the four (4) accounts
regarding the Rizal’s Retraction. The first account was written by Fr. Vicente Balaguer, one of the
Jesuit priests who visited Rizal during his last hours in Fort Santiago. The second account was written
by Fr. Pio Pi, a Jesuit Superior in the Philippines during the time when Rizal was executed. The third
account was written by Rafael Palma, a lawyer, writer, educator and politician. The fourth account
was written by Austin Coates, an Assistant Colonial Secretary and a migrate in Hong Kong in 1950.

Scrutinize each account and write a position paper vis-à-vis the proposition provided below.
(Encode your answer in a separate document.)

PROPOSITION: “THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT RIZAL RETRACTED HIS STATEMENTS
AGAINST SPAIN.”

A Position Paper is a common type of academic argument writing assignment. Typically, a Position
Paper is written after reading about and discussing a particular issue. Quite often, the readings cover more
than one issue, and as a writer you must choose a particular area of focus. The central goal of writing a
position paper is not only to state and defend your position on the issue but also to show how your stance
relates to other positions. As we write the Position Paper, we will continue to practice skills such as articulating
a thesis statement that contains an overall claim, developing an argument with reasons and evidence, and
using transitions and reader cues for coherence. (Colorado State University, 2020)

In structuring your paper, please be guided by the following components:
A. Introduction
1. Introduce the topic.
2. Provide background on the topic to explain why it is important.
3. Assert the argument (your view of the issue). More on arguments can be found below.

B. Argument/s
1. Present your first point supporting your stand.
 Give your educated and informed opinion.
 Provide support/proof using an example.

(Apply this to your other claims/points)

C. Conclusion
1. Restate your argument.
2. Tell the readers what action you want them to take but do not introduce new
information.

Below is the rubric which will be used in evaluating your answers in Test I. Review the rubric below for you to be
guided in answering.
