History 405: women Abolition essay 2022 4/6/14 Women In Religion Something many might not notice on daily basis is the struggle women encountered throughout the years to get the rights they have today. Living in the society we live in, we see equality and civil rights, but how did we get to this point? Women sacrificed in order to get our species to have what we have today. Mentally, physically, morally, and emotionally, women faced a constant battle to achieve the rights we are honored with. Although this conflict is still in the making everyday, let us not forget the fight women brought forth during times such as the Second Great Awakening, abolition, and slavery. In the late 1700's to mid 1800's, a reform took over New England causing the outburst of Second Great Awakening. During the time of the Great Awakening, god was highly called upon to forgive those who have sinned. A revival was something christians often depended on while seeking the forgiveness of their god. An Oberlin College professor by the name of Charles Grandison Finney writes, “A revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God.” (Document 1.6). With this description of a revival we feel the passion and love christians had for their god, which explains why they grieved when other did not love him as much as they did. The Second Great Awakening had a social impact on church members. It was to be known that women formed the backbone of this event. As women became more and more involved with the awakening, they slowly started to take on public roles in freedom. By women forming the backbone to what was known as the Second Great Awakening, their public roles in freedom caused highly intense arguments over the “proper” place for women in society.
