NR 451 Week 6 Question 1 & 2 GRADED A LATEST
Change can be difficult to implement. Now that you are almost finished with your change project, if
you were to implement your project in your clinical practice, what type of resistance do you expect
from staff? List at least three ways that you can lessen the resistance you may encounter to help
ensure the success of your project.

We have all had experience with change in our areas of practice & the resistance that is often seen
to it.

Please discuss what resistance you might expect if you were to implement your change project
from this class in your practice area, & discuss three ways you might be able to lessen the
resistance from staff.

Professor & class,

Implementing my change project into my department would actually be well received. There are
those that are not sure when to utilize or how to implement giving patients’ pain medication while
in triage. The first barrier would be knowledge deficit. Informing the nurses & educating them on
how to implement the change would be necessary through first an in-person in-service & second
creating a presentation to review on health stream & a post test. Then a seasoned triage nurse that
is familiar with implementing protocols & parameters will check the nurse off while triaging a
patient to ensure that the nurse is following protocol & to review any questions the nurse may have.
Assuming that the nurse is on board with the change these will be the steps, if not the nurse is not
required to participate.

Hello,

,NR 451 Week 6 Question 1 & 2 GRADED A LATEST

Change is not an easy thing to accept. When people here change they immediately become fearful &
usually think negatively. My project is implementing hourly rounding to decrease falls. The first
thing the staff will say is "we already do rounding on the patients" " I am in the room all the time".
The staff may feel it is another thing added to their list of things to do. The staff may not believe
that hourly rounding can increase patient safety & promote trust & decrease call light usage. As our
lesson identifies when people are not educated or involved in the process of developing the project
they are more likely to resist the change.

Three ways to lessen their fears & rejection:

Include the staff in the planning process so they can have input into the project

Identify key members who would like to help lead the initiative

Educate the staff on the purpose of the project, why it was initiated & present literature that speaks
about the effects of hourly rounding

Identify the staff concerns, include the staff in the project initiation

described good ways to address these.

Hi Professor Card & class,

The resistance I would expect to see if I were to implement my change project into my practice area
would probably come from the seasoned nurses. We have several A.D.N nurses that are over 55 &
believe that their years of service in nursing should suffice for not obtaining their BSN. The sad thing
is the expectations of nurses have since changed from 30 years ago. The attitude that comes along
with this degree in my facility is disheartening. Some ADN nurses believe that the younger nurses
should not be promoted because they have 5 years experience with BSN & some are MSN
prepared.

3 ways I may lessen the resistance is to use EBP. I would provide a meeting introducing the statistics
that display the rationale behind BSN or higher prepared nurses provide EBP & critical thinking in
conjunction to patients. It is imperative that nurses underst& their roles & implement the evidence
practice. The second manner that I would provide is clear communication. My EBP that needs
implementing is an assertive style with a smile. My 3rd instance would be to offer tuition
reimbursement. Although we have this option, adding more money in exchange for a time frame of
work post degree is an option to encourage the ADN nurses to return to obtain their BSN. Maybe I
would propose a ceremony at the office for these nurses to celebrate such a wonderful
accomplishment. A gift card may also be an option to allow them to have a dinner with their family. A
school that may be able to come on site to teach our employees in an effort for them to obtain their
BSN degrees may be another option for those who are not as computer savvy. Thank you

Renee
