, What are the texts about and who is the
writer?
What is Demos' text about?

For the lecture about the origin of the museums we should have read an article by Demos. The text
is called: The tate effect and was written in 2009. It's about the strategy of a museum, to show
everything that is to the liking of people who give money, so can be seen commercially. But they are
also active in schools and so on, for example . It is also noted that the Tate museums are free to
enter, but that there is a lot of commerciality in and around the museum . The writer is very
objective and does not give his own opinion.

Who is the writer Demos?

The writer is Demos, T.J. Demos is an art historian and cultural critic who writes about
contemporary art and visual culture, particularly in relation to globalization, politics, migration
and ecology.

What is Bennett's text about?

Bennett's text was mentioned in the lecture in which they thought about what an exhibition does to
the people. Bennett mainly talks about people being restrained and that the museums, in addition to
the purpose of showing objects, has the agenda to emphasize the nationalist ideas of the nations. It is
also about the superiority of the nation and that they are above underdeveloped countries and that
superiority is emphasized in the museum by the story that people see through objects. So what you see
in the museums is a forward-thinking story that the nations want to give to the visitors of the museum.

Who is the writer Bennett?

The text was written by Tony Bennett in 1988 . He is a sociologist. At the time Bennett wrote the
text, several philosophers, including Foucault, spoke about the power of the state and about seeing
and being seen. It was a time when mainly structuralists were active. Although the museum can be
seen as a source of power, Tony Bennett is still positive, because people are guided on a good path
to knowledge through the structure of a museum. It is democratic, knowledge for everyone. We will
come back later to the fact that the museum can be seen as a source of power.

What is Jones' text about

In the third week of classes we talked about the origins of world exhibitions and Biennials. Jones'
text called: Biennial Culture a longer history is about the connection between Biennials and the
World's Fairs. It shows what the first Biennial was, that the city of Venice had played an important
role in it and that it can be seen as the most important Biennial.

Who is the writer Jones?

Caroline A. Jones is an American art historian, author, curator, and critic. She teaches and works in
the History Theory Criticism section of the Department of Architecture at the MIT School of
Architecture and Planning, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. So she knows everything about
Architecture and the use of space.
